A small sampling.....
As we get into this book, I want everyone to ask themselves, “Do I have a dream?” There are only two answers to this question. If you seriously answered “no,” then this book is not for you, at least not yet. Instead I would recommend some time to do some soul-searching and self examination. This could be in the form of meditation, reading other books on the subject, practicing religion or talking with friends and loved ones. Good luck and I hope to see you in the future. If you did answer in the affirmative, congratulations on admitting to yourself that you do in fact have a dream. Stand up and say out loud in a confident tone, “I am a dreamer” or on the other hand don’t do that at all. Although self affirmation has been proven to be a very effective tool in accomplishing goals, we will save that for later. I do however, want you to take your notebook and your pen and write down your dream or dreams. There is no limit to how many dreams you may have or what size and scope they may be. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (the 24th president of Liberia) once said, “If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough.” A word of caution however, on having multiple dreams and goals; sometimes they conflict and sometimes they can only be followed in a certain order. For example, if you wish to become the champion of the Boston Marathon where all contestants have tremendous endurance and slim to skinny builds it will be difficult to also win the Mr. Olympia bodybuilding competition in the same year. The requirements of following those dreams are in direct conflict with one another and attempting to pursue both at the same time will lead to nowhere. Simply stated, the only limits on your dreams are the ones you create. Moving on to the second question, “Are you pursuing your dream?” If you answered yes, that is an awesome achievement in itself. I would suggest reading this book anyway, paying extra attention to the planning section as well as the section on eliminating distraction. For all of you who answered no, let’s get out your notebook and begin writing down the various reasons you are not pursuing your dream. This list is going to become important in a few chapters, but for now we are going to assume that most of the reasons are going to be more like excuses and can be overcome. There is one caveat to this. If your reasons include matters of family or loved ones, such as raising and providing for a family or maybe taking care of a terminally ill friend, your responsibilities lie elsewhere. For realizing and accepting this, I also applaud you and want you to know the world needs more people like you. Maybe someday down the road your situation will change and it will be possible to achieve your goals, but for now continue being a noble soul and contribute to your fellow man. I want you to write down everything you can possibly think of that you believe would stand in the way of your pursuit. Leave no stone unturned in the creation of your list. Take into account everything, your financial situation, your relationship status, health, location and climate. Write down your fears and insecurities. The objective of creating this list is to complete a comprehensive self introspection and to uncover very early on any potential roadblocks to realizing your dreams. Take as much time as you need and feel free to go back and add things to the list as they pop into your head. Once you have all your current issues documented read on. |
